Language, culture and cognition: a study on requests in Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Argentinian Spanish and German

Abstract

Starting from the premise that language is not just a code made of grammar structures and lexical forms, but a product of human cognition encompassing linguistic, cultural and cognitive schemata, in this study we set out to understand how these categories emerge from language, by analysing requests in Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Argentinian Spanish and German from a cross-cultural pragmatic perspective. In particular, we focused our analyses on how (in)directness and conventionality were linguistically realized in head acts and, concurrently, on which perspectives were used, namely whether requests were speaker-oriented, hearer-oriented, inclusive or impersonal (BLUM-KULKA; HOUSE; KASPER, 1989). We hypothesized that, by observing requests from this perspective, we could verify the presence of analogies and differences in linguistic and cultural traits. While some analogies were observed, with the four languages sharing a preference for intermediary positions in the speaker’s choices, there also emerged differences that point to peculiarities in each culture.

Adriana Mendes Porcellato, University of São Paulo

Adriana Mendes Porcellato holds a PhD in Italian Language, Literature and Culture from Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Università degli Studi Roma Tre and Università La Sapienza, and a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG). In her studies, she has investigated the role of pragmatics and culture in foreign language teaching (Italian and English), with a special focus on the analysis and development of pedagogical material. Since 2016 she is a member of the research group Pragmática (inter)linguística, cross-cultural e intercultural (USP).

Elisabetta Santoro, Universidade de São Paulo

She has a degree in Foreign Languages ​​and Literatures at Università degli Studi di Bari, Italy (German / English) and in Translation at Ruprecht-Karls Universität de Heidelberg, Germany (German / Italian / Portuguese). Master and PhD were completed at the University of São Paulo (USP), where she has been a professor in ​​Italian Language and Literature since 2003. Her main research interests are: second language acquisition, learning and teaching of Italian L2, pragmatics, discursive semiotics and relations between Italy and Brazil. On these topics, she published articles and essays. She is a president of the Brazilian Association of Teachers of Italian (ABPI) and member of the board of the corresponding international association (AIPI). She is also a member of different scientific associations of the area. She coordinates the research groups “(Inter)linguistic, cross-cultural and intercultural Pragmatics” (GPP) and “Language, Identity and Memory: Italian of the Italians of Brazil” (GLIM) and is researcher at LEER (Laboratory of Studies on Ethnicity, Racism and Discrimination at the University of São Paulo).
