Trans women, gender violence and the permanent witch hunt

Abstract

In this article, transphobic violence will be dealt with within the scope of gender violence, understood as historical and systematic structural violence based on a permanent witch hunt process. It is the maximum expression of patriarchy alongside colonialism and racism, structurally linked to primitive accumulation. In our analysis, transphobia is not only found in the field of lethal violence, but in the daily and systematic processes of rights violations. This results from the effects of the globalization of capital and the ultra-neoliberal offensive in countries with peripheral and dependent capitalism such as Brazil. All these elements are analyzed as determinants for the structural exclusion of trans people, and states that transphobic violence occurs as trans women resist the hegemonic gender matrix.

Professora Substituta da Escola de Serviço Social da Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO). Doutoranda em Serviço Social no PPGSS/UFRJ, Área de Concentração em Cultura e Serviço Social. Mestra em Serviço Social pelo PPGSS/UERJ (2017), Área de Concentração em Trabalho e Política Social. Especialista em Gênero e Sexualidade pelo CLAM/IMS/ UERJ (2011) e em Políticas Públicas e Cultura de Direitos pelo NEPP-DH/UFRJ (2016). Formou-se em Serviço Social pela UFRJ (2009) e em Arquivologia pela UNIRIO (2007). Possui experiência como assistente social, pesquisadora, docente e consultora nas seguintes áreas: Serviço Social, trabalho e questão social, políticas púbicas e cidadania, violência e direitos humanos, relações de gênero e patriarcado, feminismo, diversidade sexual e direitos sexuais, infância e juventude, educação profissional juvenil, análise de indicadores sociais e diagnósticos socioeconômicos. Atualmente tem se debruçado na tematização identidades trans, cidadania e violência e na reflexão teórico-política das relações estruturais de gênero, raça/etnia e classe.
