Pollutants capable of disrupting the endocrine systems of humans and wildlife represent a significant environmental threat. Synthetic hormones, such as 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), and natural hormones, upon reaching water bodies, pose a challenge for their removal to satisfactory levels. Ultrasound is considered an environmentally friendly and sustainable technique, employed to intensify processes in different matrices. This study evaluated the potential for EE2 removal from water through indirect ultrasound application in the presence of metallic screens. The frequencies (25 and 37kHz), temperatures (25 and 30°C), ultrasound application times (15 to 45min), and metallic screen masses (11 and 24g) were investigated. For cost-effectiveness reasons, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, with second-derivative processing, was used to monitor the effect of the treatments, with results qualitatively confirmed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) at 45min. The results showed that ultrasound alone promoted a maximum EE2 removal of 7.2%, while the presence of metallic screens increased this removal to up to 21.2%, particularly at 30°C. Future studies should investigate other analytical techniques to confirm the effectiveness of EE2 removal.
