Abstract

This experience report addresses the Laboratory of Artistic Experimentation in Ceramics, held from July 1 to 5, 2024 at the UNESP Institute of Arts, São Paulo campus. The event promoted integration between students from UNESP and ETEC Carlos de Campos, addressing ceramics and its ancestral and scientific dimensions. The event included practical and theoretical activities such as the construction of a traditional wood-fired oven and the modeling of ceramic pieces in conjunction with the research developed by the graduate students participating in this activity. The initiative also highlighted the importance of university extension and academic exchange.

Author Biographies

  • Clara Pitanga Rocha, Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho

    Master's student in the Postgraduate Program of the Institute of Arts of the São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP) in the research line Theoretical, Historical and Cultural Approaches to Art. She has a degree in Visual Arts from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). She is a ceramist and researches walking as an artistic and aesthetic practice.

  • Alice Roger Bombardi, Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP)

    She is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Processes and Procedures at the UNESP Institute of Arts, under the guidance of Professor Priscila Leonel. Her creative universe is vast and diverse, reflecting a wealth of experience in cultural mediation, hands-on workshops, and artistic assistance. In the world of ceramics, Alice is dedicated to understanding the essence of pieces that emanate vibrant craftsmanship, full of stories and nuances that are revealed in alternative firing methods, such as wood-fired and raku. In addition, Alice enjoys building traditional wood-fired kilns as a practice that demarcates territories and builds personal relationships in spaces that are emotionally important to her. These firings are like journeys that reveal not only the technique, but also the soul of each creation and relationship.

  • Brunno Figueiredo Rodrigues, Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP)

    Artist, educator and researcher from São Paulo interested in observation, collection and recording. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Literature from USP and is currently studying for a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Visual Arts from UNESP. He began giving private English lessons at the age of 18. He gained experience in higher education when he began as a university tutor in the areas of Portuguese-English Literature at Universidade Virtual Cruzeiro do Sul, leaving the position at the end of 2023. During these years, he worked as an English, Portuguese and writing teacher at the Popular Courses of FEA and ACEPUSP (Association of Students and Researchers of the University of São Paulo). At the ACEPUSP Language Center, he taught a free English as a second language course and coordinated the project in different areas (pedagogical, financial and general). Currently, he works and researches poetic and pedagogical possibilities based on living in vacant lots, through the Postgraduate Program of the Institute of Arts at UNESP - São Paulo, he is an art educator at Sesc Pompéia and a Portuguese teacher for foreigners.

  • Beatriz Araújo Isidoro, Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho”

    Visual artist, art educator and researcher. She holds a degree in Visual Arts from Universidade Estadual Paulista and is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from the same institution. She is currently an art teacher in the public school system in São Paulo and an assistant in creativity courses at the ceramics studio at Sesc Pompeia. In her development as an artist, she understands research as part of her creative process, seeing beauty in the act of testing, reading and building empirical knowledge about her own practice.

  • Henry Silva Castelli, Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP)

    Artist, educator, and researcher who lives and works in São Paulo, with a degree in Visual Arts from Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP) and a technical qualification in Museology and Environment from Escola Técnica Estadual (ETEC). In his artistic work, he explores the materiality of clay and textiles to investigate themes of memory and personal narratives. In 2023, he received a scholarship from the Arts and Cultural Strategy integrated program at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 2020 he completed the course Management of Successful Cultural and Arts Organizations at the University of Maryland, College Park.

  • Priscila Leonel, UNESP

    Professor of undergraduate and postgraduate Arts at UNESP. Visual Artist, post-doctorate (ECA-USP), with research in the area of ​​Ancestry, Memories and Decoloniality linked to Ceramic Artistic Processes and Art Education.
