This experience report presents the results of a lesson plan implemented with third-year high school students enrolled in the “Sports, Science and its Languages” elective track, aiming to promote meaningful learning about cellular respiration and the effects of cyanide poisoning. The pedagogical proposal integrated active methodologies - inquiry-based learning and dramatization (Role Play) - in a sequence of nine lessons, beginning with a problem situation based on the Boate Kiss nightclub tragedy. The activities included hypothesis formulation, teacher-created simulations to represent gas transport in the bloodstream, and dramatizations of the electron transport chain, highlighting the blockage caused by cyanide. This approach led to greater student engagement, fostering a systemic understanding of cellular biochemical processes and connecting science to real-life contexts, while also emphasizing the teacher’s mediating role when dealing with complex content. The results suggest that contextualization combined with interactive methodologies can overcome conceptual difficulties and make biochemistry teaching more meaningful and accessible.
