The construction of hydro power plants in Brazil has become more and more complicated in the last few years, mostly due to the big distances between generation and load centers, as well as the major environmental impacts caused by such projects. In 2012, Brazilian National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) established the possibility of distributed generation (DG) of energy by utility company costumers from renewable sources, and since then many adaptations and updates were made on the regulatory framework of net metering in Brazil, regarding the interconnection process, taxes, and environmental licensing where the state of Ceará issued an innovative legislation. This study aims to make a comprehensive review and evaluation of the regulatory framework regarding DG in Brazil, and its consequences on future energy policies and implications on DG market potential in this country.
