Abstract

Introduction: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a genetically determined disease where the amino acid glutamic acid is replaced by valine, in position 6 of the beta globin chain, resulting in anomalous hemoglobin. It is described by chronic hemolytic anemia, specific vaso-occlusive and progressive vascular lesions. In Brazil, it represents the most common monogenic hereditary disease and it is estimated that there are between 60,000 and 100,000 Brazilians with sickle cell anemia. Objectives: Review and describe the initial management to be carried out by the clinical physician, still in the emergency department, of the main complications arising from the disease. Methods: Bibliographic review carried out in the Pubmed database, considering articles with the keyword “sickle cell disease emergency”. Results: SCD presents complications such as vaso-occlusive pain crises, acute chest syndrome, infections and others that must be quickly diagnosed in order to quickly start treatment with analgesics, antibiotics or simple or exchange blood transfusions, among others. specific treatments indicated according to each complication. When not diagnosed and treated quickly, they can be fatal. Conclusion: SCD is still a very prevalent pathology in the world with a high rate of morbidity and mortality, related to the complications of the disease. Therefore, a quick and accurate diagnosis by healthcare professionals in urgency and emergency departments is extremely important to ensure quality care for patient.
