Images of power in Roman Africa
the mausolea of Ghirza and the political affirmation of the ‘principes gentium’ (3rd-5th centuries AD)

We propose, in this article, to understand the images of political power recorded in friezes, arcades and burial chambers of the Mausoleums of Ghirza, a North African village located approximately 250 km south of the Mediterranean coast and built in the limes Tripolitanus. By problematizing the visual sources found in the funerary monuments of Ghirza, we seek to problematize them based on the political logic of the interests of the local ruling families. Our aim is to understand the way in which the principes gentium in Ghirza displayed, in the images recorded in their Mausoleums, their political, religious, military and economic power, using such funerary monuments as vehicles for affirming their authority and power, visually reproducing, to do so, symbols of distinction that exalted an excellent representation.
