A Descrição da Grécia, escrita por Pausânias, no século II, é uma obra composta por dez livros que detalham as regiões da Grécia continental, combinando descrições geográficas, históricas e culturais. O autor enfatiza monumentos, rituais religiosos e tradições locais, além de relatar conflitos e eventos políticos, como a dominação romana. O artigo analisa essa obra dentro do contexto da Segunda Sofística, destacando seu caráter arcaizante e sua relação com a memória cultural e a identidade grega, conforme discutido por Bommas (2011) e Alcock (1996). Argumenta-se que a Descrição da Grécia responde à provincianização da Grécia, após 146 a.C., refletindo tanto um idealizado passado glorioso quanto a adaptação ao domínio romano. Enquanto Porter (2001) e Pretzler (2007) ressaltam seu caráter performático e informativo, Habicht (1998) critica a superficialidade intelectual do período. Já Anderson (1993) e Whitmarsh (2005) enfatizam a construção da identidade grega sob Roma. O estudo também relaciona Pausânias aos sofistas, como Polemon e Élio Aristides, demonstrando como sua obra se insere em um contexto político e cultural híbrido, no qual a retórica e a erudição sustentavam tanto o entretenimento quanto a afirmação da identidade grega, ressaltando o efervescente panorama intelectual do período.
