Argumentation and ethos in an interview by Lula to Jornal Nacional under the light of the semiolinguistic perspective on discourse

This article aims at presenting the results of a research which studied, under the light of the Semiolinguistic Theory of Discourse (Charaudeau, 1992, 2007, 2008, 2013), the construction of the argumentation and the projection of the ethos in an interview granted by Lula to Rede Globo’s Jornal Nacional during the 2022 election campaign. During the data analysis, we first sought out to describe the communication contract that rules the interview in question, and then analysed both the argumentative organization of the questions and the argumentative structure of the answers, also investigating, based on the content of the answers, the rhetoric-argumentative resources that a presidential candidate uses to project different images of the self in the discourse. Regarding the methodology, this work stems from a documental research, of qualitative nature and with an interpretivist analysis of the data. In summary, the results show that the argumentation crosses and constitutes the discoursive space of the interview, since the participants of the interaction activate argumentative resources, stand up for positions and seek out to act on the instance of reception in search for audience. In relation to the interviewee, a strategic use of the discourse for the construction of the ethos was noticed.
