a study on the nomenclature of squares and parks in the city of Dourados/MS

Abstract

The research is part of the area of ​​Toponymy, a subdivision of Onomastics, and investigates a section of urban toponymy in Dourados – MS. Considering the correlation between language and physical and historical-cultural aspects, observed more evidently at the lexical level of the language, the main objective of the work is to verify the motivations of the toponyms of squares and parks in the city of Dourados as well as to explain historical and sociocultural aspects to them associates. Regarding the research methodology, we note that the collection of toponyms was carried out by consulting a spreadsheet obtained from the Municipal Secretariat of Urban Services of Dourados. The analysis was based on studies that discuss the relationship between geographic names and external factors. The main theoretical and methodological assumptions used in this work, for data collection, organization and analysis, are those of Dick (1990, 1992) and Trapero (1995), Mori (2007).  Regarding the results, the research showed that, of the 39 names analyzed, the majority, 30, are tributes to male people, such as Parque Antenor Martins and Praça Pedro Rigotti; Toponyms analyzed are related to historical and cultural aspects of the municipality, such as Praça Imigração Japonesa and Praça do Ervateiro.
