Toponymic research is growing in productivity in Brazil. Each discovery linked to the act of naming places fills in any gaps in the study of this interdisciplinary field of knowledge. In this sense, this article aims to think about the relationship between territory, culture and language, highlighting some approaches and, above all, how these thoughts contribute to the understanding of the cultural dynamics that are present in the names of public spaces: the squares. As for the methodological aspects, it is a study of a basic nature, of the theoretical genre, of secondary sources, with a qualitative approach and descriptive objective. Based, in the field of Toponymy, by the theoretical contributions of Dick (1990 and developments); in the field of studies about space by Santos (2005); Peixoto (2019) and in the field of studies on Culture by Laraia (2001). As a result, it is pointed out that the toponyms of public squares in the city of Palmeira dos Índios, in the agreste region of Alagoas, can reveal several cultural singularities of the territory and its subjects, demonstrating discursive elements underlying the toponymic choices in the act of naming these spaces.
