Introduction: Adopting a healthy lifestyle is a recommendation for diabetes mellitus (DM) treatment. Changing eating habits is a complex DM treatment stage because it comprises sociocultural, emotional and affective aspects. Objective: To investigate how women with DM have experienced the need of changing their eating habits after their diagnosis. Methods: Five women participating in a support group were interviewed about their experience in changing their eating habits. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed based on the phenomenological approach. Results: Three different moments were related to changes in participants’- ‘eating habits: before, after and at diagnosis time. Three categories stood out in the analyzed interviews, namely: coping, remembering the diagnosis, and sharing and living in group. Conclusion: The diagnosis was so striking that it took the forefront of women’s experiences, but it has also encouraged women to positively coping with, and accepting, changes in their eating habits, besides the group support.
