Introduction: Depression is a chronic psychiatric disorder with a high prevalence in the general population and with a higher incidence in females, which leads to decreased quality of life. It is caused by innumerable social and biological processes, among them a possible association between depressive symptoms and vitamin D deficiency is studied. Objectives: To group and synthesize studies correlating hypovitaminosis D and depression in women of different age groups. Methods: Literature review with research in the PubMed and Bireme databases. 30 studies were included in this review, which were divided into 4 subgroups of women in different physiological states. Results: Of the 30 articles, 17 verified the intrinsic relationship between hypovitaminosis D and the increased occurrence of depressive symptoms in women. In addition, six articles show extremely favorable results for the use of vitamin D as a prophylactic and / or treatment of depression in women of different age groups. On the other hand, in seven articles, the relationship between vitamin D and depression was not evidenced. Conclusions: It is possible to conclude that there is a relationship between depressive symptoms and vitamin D deficiency in women.
