The representation of suffering among adolescents and young people:
suicide among students in the city of São Paulo, Brazil

Introduction: Suicidal behavior is recognized as being associated with distinct causes that interact with each other. Objective: To describe journalistic reports addressing two cases of suicide among adolescent and young students, thus bringing to light the representation of the phenomenon of suicide in the youth population. Methods: This is a descriptive qualitative study, using Thematic Content Analysis methodology applied to two journalistic articles. Results: The study developed two meaning units: risk factors for suicide in adolescence and protective factors against suicide in adolescence. The analysis of the reports, in connection with the literature on the subject, allowed the identification of the complexity of the issue, recognizing suicide among adolescents and young people as a serious public health problem. Conclusion: Family, school, and the fragility of bonds, relationships, and institutions can sometimes function as factors producing suffering, and at other times as factors protecting against suffering.
