Anverso e reverso: a imagem monetária de Élia Eudóxia, imperatriz do Oriente (395-404)

Não são poucas as representações de determinadas personagens que são concebidas e condicionadas quase que exclusivamente por informações apresentadas em documentos escritos, sejam eles contrários ou a favor de quem é retratado. No caso de Eudóxia, imperatriz do Oriente entre 395 e 404, não é diferente. Os documentos de natureza textual, em grande parte cristã, desqualificam a imperatriz, bem como lhe atribuírem a culpa por atacar e conspirar contra João Crisóstomo durante os eventos que levaram o bispo ao exílio. Contudo, a documentação material nos permite visualizar uma representação distinta daquela propagada pelos documentos escritos. Nesse sentido, nosso objetivo, neste artigo, é analisar a imagem e a representação numismática de Élia Eudóxia transmitida por meio de um conjunto de moedas cunhadas em sua homenagem durante o governo de Arcádio, levando em consideração que uma rica discussão sobre a luta de representações a respeito de Eudóxia pode ser desenvolvida, uma vez que os símbolos contidos nos artefatos monetários exprimem significados e intenções que vão na contramão do que é apresentado, até então, sobre a imperatriz, ao mesmo tempo em que demonstram distintas possibilidades de atuação feminina na Antiguidade Tardia.
