The relations between power and memory in the‘Urbs’
astudy of Republican honorific columns and Octavian’s ‘columnae rostratae’ based on coins

In this article, we explore the iconographic motif of honorific columns within a monetary corpus that extends from the 2nd century BCE, comprising the coins portraying the Columna Minucia (RRC, 242/1; 243/1), to the Augustan denarius depicting a Columna Rostrata on the reverse (RIC, Augustus, 271). Building on the concept of triumphal memory (Hölscher, 2006), we aim to understand how these monuments, whether standing alone or integrated into larger architectural complexes, served as elevated bases for statues commemorating individuals, either during their lifetimes or posthumously.Downloads
