Author Guidelines

The papers must be typed in Word for Windows, Times New Roman font, size 12, spacing 1.5. The size of the articles will be between 12 and 20 pages, including bibliography and footnotes. The size of the reviews will be between 2 and 7 pages. The contributions can be submitted in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian or French.

Each paper or review can be written by two authors at the most. To submit a text the authors must have a master degree at least. The contributions will be original. However it is allowed to publish in Portuguese a translation of an article issued in a foreign language. Reviews must be written about a book released no more than three years ago. Romanitas does not publish documents.

In order to reduce the costs of publication, we request the authors to proofread the article or review carefully. The lack of proofreading noticed by the Editors will be a strong motive for the rejection of a contribution.

Expressions in foreign language, titles of books and parts of the text the author wants to highlight must be typed in italic. The use of bold letters must be avoided. Literal quotations up to three lines must be inserted into the text and typed with inverted commas. Quotations of more than three lines must be separated from the text and typed with a left margin of 4 cm, Times New Roman font, size 11, spacing 1.0.

Pictures, tables and charts must be scanned in .jpg or .png, resolution between 100 e 150 dpi, and inserted straight into the text. Pictures and charts must bear title and source.

Under the title, it will be put the author's name and last name. After that, there will be an abstract with no more than ten lines. The abstract must be typed in English with a translation in Portuguese, French, Spanish or Italian. The abstract and its translation must be followed by key-words (5 at the most).

References must be inserted into the text and must contain the author's full name, the year in which the article or book was issued and the number of the page where the information was found. For instance:

“Although these domestic decorations openly declared the social aspirations of the Roman provincial class that commissioned them, be they in Cyprus or in Africa, they also served other functions" (Kondoleon, 1995, p. 106).

According to Cameron (2011, p. 201), "the closing of the temples in the first half of the 390s marked the end of the public paganism, but that tells us nothing about hearts and minds".

Notes, having always the purpose of clarifying a previous statement or add further information, will be positioned as footnotes.

The Bibliography will be put at the end of the article, in alphabetical order, as follows:

  1. Book
CAMERON, A. The last Pagans of Rome. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2011.
  2. Chapter of a book
    REDFIELD, J. O homem e a vida doméstica. In: VERNANT, J. P. (Org.). O homem grego. Lisboa: Presença, 1993, p. 145-171.
  3. Article
COLOMBANI, M. C. Las marcas del extranjero. Reconocimiento y desconocimiento: los riesgos de la 'hybris'. Phoînix, n. 14, p. 213-228, 2008.

The references of the sources must be inserted in the text, displaying the author’s name written in small letter, the title of the work written in Latin and italic and the number of the book, chapter or verse. The first time the source is mentioned, the author’s name and the title of the work must be written completely. After that, such information must be abbreviated, for instance:

“Then, several men of the Church fought in name of the truth vehemently and defended the apostolic and ecclesiastical arguments (Eusebius, Historia Ecclesiastica, V, 7, 5)."

In this work I will add some facts which were different from the ones that happened previously and were unfavorable to us, as well the facts that happened since the beginning of the persecution” (Eus., Hist. Eccl., VIII, 13, 8).

All the articles submitted to the review will be verified by means of a plagiarism detection program. The articles whose percentage of copy without authorship identification will be superior to 10% will not be published.

From 2022 onwards, since an author has published his article in the review, the publication of a new article shall occur only after an interval of 2 (two) years or 4 (four) issues. The same rule shall be observed in case of co-authorship.
