Abstract

he early Christian identity formation has been discussed by scholars around the world for many years. This question has proven to be complex mainly because of the rich background of the cultures of the Greco-Roman territory, which requires attention to the particularities of relations between Christians, Jews and pagans in their varied contours and institutions. Several disciplines have been combined to explain how Christian groups emerged from within Judaism to offer that would be the official religion of the Roman Empire. Analyzing the main aspects of some researches developed until now on this topic, this article aims to point out the importance of theology to the understanding of the symbolic universe in which the identity of the first Christians was constructed.
