The statue of ‘Prima Porta’ Augustus and the personification of the Roman Empire in History schoolbooks

This paper analyses the uses of the Prima Porta Augustus in the chapters referring to Ancient Rome in thirteen Brazilian schoolbooks approved by the National Program of Schoolbooks (PNLD-2018). There is a fundamental question that guides this paper: to which types of Roman Empire that statue is linked in the corpus? To answer that, this essay collected every image of Prima Porta Augustus present in each History schoolbook of PNLD-2018. These images will be examined together with the texts adjacent to them since they should not be seen as isolated data. I will defend that these images of Prima Porta Augustus are associated with an idea of an unquestionable and expansionist empire, built from the concept of Pax Romana.
