Physiognomonia and visual culture
the archetype of ‘vir rusticus’ in the mosaic of the Laberri’s villa, at Proconsular Africa (2nd-3rd centuries AD)

Physiognomy was the belief that an individual's body reflects their internal nature. In this article, we discuss how this belief can be observed in the construction of the archetype of the “rustic man” – vir rusticus – in the mosaic of the Villa of Laberi, dated from the 2nd to 3rd centuries in Uthina, a city in Proconsular Africa. This mosaic records scenes of agricultural labor executed by subordinate strata. In light of this, we analyze how these rural workers, with diverse profiles, had their identities reduced to a single stereotype of the uncivilized man, identified by degraded appearance and vicious character. By examining the mosaic in the context of the descriptions by Apuleius and the physiognomy treatise by Polemon of Laodicea, we propose that the vir rusticus constituted an otherness to the identity of the North African aristocracy, which regarded physical appearance, including body care, posture, and attire, as expressions of humanitas, in contrast to the rusticity of the marginalized sectors.
