Abstract

In this article we will discuss the representations of death in the Roman Mediterranean in Metamorphoseon, by Lucius Apuleius. To do so, we will make some critical reflexions on the funerary rituals, for, as we understand them, they changed into spectacles of power throughout the Roman Empire. Thus, it is important to understand the funerary procession and its progress in urban space, for, along with their participants, the symbols and insignia embedded a theatrical ceremonial in society, which put in the scene the dead in the power structure and their position in the family generations.
