Composting as a sustainable teaching tool for socio-environmental

Abstract

This article is the result of the master's thesis of the Postgraduate Program in Education and Science Teaching in the Amazon at the State University of Pará. In search of new solutions for socio-environmental problems in the schools of Moju municipality, strategies were developed to implement socio-environmental practices in a local public school. Thus, the project "Composting at School: A Path to Sustainability in the Amazon" was initiated, aiming to promote the reuse of organic solid waste through the construction of a school compost bin and to reduce the amount of waste produced daily in the school community. This type of work is of utmost importance as it presents an interdisciplinary character, fosters socio-environmental discussions, and encourages the formation of students as protagonists in the teaching and learning process. The research was developed in five stages, resulting in environmental improvement through the reduction of organic waste accumulation, the creation of a garden for school meals, and increased student self-esteem, with students being the protagonists of this process. In this way, it was possible to discuss concepts, values, and alternatives about environmental preservation and to act as responsible citizens.
