This article aims to identify characteristics that allow indicating when a Mathematics class based on Problem Solving is associated with an active teaching methodology. To this end, a theoretical study was carried out that fits, as to the objective, as a descriptive research and as to the procedure, as bibliographic, in which the concepts of active methodologies are presented, as well as the Problem Solving as a teaching strategy, defining problem understanding and teaching for and through Problem Solving. The results indicate that the role of the teacher and students, as well as the nature of the proposed mathematical activities, are what define the intended characterization.
