Multimodalidade em livros acadêmico-científicos:
o uso de características tipográficas em capas e sumários

Typography has been standing out as a semiotic mode in the past few decades (VAN LEEUWEN, 2006). Considering that, this research had as its main objective to investigate the possible visualization process that has been occurring in academic-scientific books’ covers and content lists. In order to accomplish that, 21 academic books from the field of Applied Linguistics, published between 2000 and 2020 were selected and had the typography present in its covers and content list analyzed based on the characteristics described by van Leeuwen (2006) and Serafini and Clausen (2012). The patterns portray an increasing use of colors, irregular elements and informal aspects not only in the covers but in the summaries as well. As such, the visualization process pointed out by Bezemer and Kress (2009) is also occurring in the typography of covers and summaries of the analyzed books. In this sense, we understand that new potentials are being reached with the use of fonts’ characteristics in meaning production. This probably will impact the next generation of students and teachers.
