Abstract

The present article aims at analyzing the usage of voces magicae (VM) in the Greek Magical Papyri. VM are words with no evident lexical meaning, similar to abracadabra, and are very common in magical texts. The PGM are a collection of magical texts from Greco-Roman Egypt, and it features many magical handbooks manuals and other types of text. The analysis is based on syntactical and contextual criteria and it focuses on how the VM are used and their functions, in opposition to a more traditional etymological posture.
