The boundaries of Christianity in Alexandria
considerations from the episode of the Easter controversy, late 2nd century AD

The last decades of the second century C.E. were the stage for one of the first debates about a sole theme between Christian bishops from different parts of the Mediterranean. Even if restrict to letters, the Paschal quarrel is usually pointed as an example of diversity and confrontation between social groups which, theoretically, shared one same Christian stream. Less noted, however, is the scarcity of information about the participation of Alexandrian Christians in this debate. This article suggests that such a scarcity is not casual, but revelatory of how the internal social relations of Alexandrian Christian groups differed from those in other urban centres of the Roman Empire in the same period. For this, we will use as the main source the Ecclesiastical History by Eusebius of Caesarea.
