Abstract

This article aims to present a case study of the islet of Thasopoula, a small island located in the Northern Aegean, near the island of Thasos. Since the Archaic period, this small island has maintained a strong strategic connection with the Northern Aegean region. Through the analysis of material remains found in the excavation reports of the islet, we seek to explore issues related to human dynamics on small islands. In doing so, we aim to challenge the concepts of non-isolation and the revelation of lesser-known islands subordinate to larger ones, utilizing the available data. To comprehend the local and regional dynamics of small islands in the Northern Aegean, we place our discussion within the scope of emerging theoretical trends in the Mediterranean, especially those questioning the concept of insularity. Building upon these theoretical debates, we observe in Thasopoula the presence of elements suggestin connectivity and intense activity at levels of interaction not only local but also regional. We posit that the fact that Thasopoula is a strategically controlled islet sheds light on areas delineated by the dominion of larger islands, representing a kind of regional koiné for the control of strategic areas between islands.
