‘Da Líbia toda a costa mediterrânea está em seu poder’
a expansão romana na África a partir da ‘Geografia’ de Estrabão

Neste artigo, objetivamos analisar como o geógrafo grego Estrabão de Amásia (64 AEC–24 EC) enunciou o processo de expansão territorial romano no norte da África. Para isto, examinamos o Livro XVII da Geografia, que contém a descrição da Líbia. As relações estabelecidas entre romanos e povos líbios foram marcadas pela colaboração e pelo conflito. Estrabão, ao longo do seu discurso, faz referência a Roma e às ações de seus agentes em toda a oikoumene, compreendendo a expansão romana na Líbia como um processo iniciado no período republicano e em vigência em sua época. Conclui-se que tal expansão é evidenciada pela terminologia; exploração de recursos locais; instituição de províncias; e pela presença de agentes a serviço de Roma no território norte-africano.
