Evaluation of the density of PET and PC polyurethane foams with a mixture of diisocyanates
Keywords:
Polyurethane, Density, HDI/MDIAbstract
The mechanical properties of polyurethanes (PU) depend on the density of these materials. Mixing diisocyanates in the formulation of PU's is one of the strategies when the stoichiometric ratio of polyol to diisocyanate is less than one. Polyester polyols obtained from the partial depolymerization of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polycarbonate (PC) through the glycerolysis process form PUs with 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,6-hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). Comparatively, PUs were synthesized with MDI only and also with a mixture of 10% HDI and 90% MDI, for each type of polyol. It was observed that the density of the PU obtained with the mixture increased by 16% for the PU made from depolymerized PET (PET-OL) and by 50% for the PU made from depolymerized PC (PC-OL). A reduction in water absorption was observed for both polyurethanes obtained with the mixture of diisocyanates.
