The present work is based on Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). According to Mann and Thompson (1988), the RST is a useful theoretical tool for description of the relationships between clauses in a text, the analysis of the meanings of conjunctions in the sentence combination process, the study of the coherence and identification of propositional relations that, although not often marked, eventually emerge from the structure during the process of textual interpretation. With this theoretical basis, we intend to investigate the structural composition and the explicit and inferred propositional relations that emerge in an ENEM essay selected by INEP as an example of a text that obtained the highest grade in 2017. Our study corresponds to a textual analysis exercise based on the RST, with the objective of identifying how this type of textual production, of such a specific nature, is structured through the relations between clauses, as well as between larger textual portions, such as period and paragraphs. English abstract version. Maintain the seme settings as the abstract of the original language. If the original language of the article is not Portuguese, the abstract and the Keywords in Portuguese should be presented. Thus, we observed that the ENEM essay presented a rhetorical structure consistent with the textual typology of typology of expositive-argumentative texts. Relationships were identified that are directly involved in thematic and argumentative development, such as evidence, list, conclusion and elaboration.
