This paper offers an account on scalarity expression in Portuguese. Based on Functional Discourse Grammar model (Hengeveld; Mackenzie, 2008), the aim is to describe até and ainda, in their expansive use, in order to determine whether these items trigger discursive-pragmatic scales. Following Schwenter (1999; 2000; 2002) and Schwenter and Traugott (2000), the results reveal (i) a correlation between scalarity expression and the double scope of até and ainda in the Interpersonal Level, and (ii) a functional distinction between these two items - while até functions as an absolute scalar particle, ainda is a relative scalar particle.
