Rhetorical relations signaled by discourse marker mas in strategies for the construction of the spoken text

This paper aims to investigate the functioning of discourse marker (DM) mas as a formal signal of coherence relations, contributing to the studies on the construction of the spoken text. For this purpose, we used a corpus consisting of ten interviews available in the database of the Grupo de Pesquisas Funcionalistas do Norte/Noroeste do Paraná (Funcpar). The theoretical support is Rhetorical Structure Theory - RST (MANN; THOMPSON, 1988; MANN; MATTHIESSEN; THOMPSON, 1989), a functionalist descriptive theory dedicated to the study of the coherence relations which arise from the combination of the parts of a text. The relations studied by RST start from discourse level and, although they do not require the presence of formal marks to be established, they can be signaled by items such as mas. After the tabulation of the data, we found that mas initiates parenthetical insertions, reintroduces topics, marks the beginning of paraphrases and rhetorical questions, in addition to acting in the dynamics of shifts (FÁVERO; ANDRADE; AQUINO, 2006; JUBRAN, 2006). Thus, the MD signals the relations parenthetical, same-unit, restatement and elaboration.
