Sociolinguistic awareness
a review of the concept based on Brazilian and foreign studies

Emerging investigations on sociolinguistic awareness have contributed to uncovering the mechanisms that affect the association of certain social meanings to the facts of the language, as well as contributing to a better understanding of the constitutive processes of speakers' linguistic identity. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to analyze the concept of sociolinguistic awareness, based on nine articles published in a national and international context. As a methodological way to achieve this objective, we chose the theoretical review and qualitative description of the studies. The analysis and reflection on the notion of sociolinguistic consciousness, in the light of the theoretical references of Oushiro (2021), Freitag (2020), McGowan and Babel (2019), Bijvoet and Fraurud (2016), Pearce (2015) among others, indicated two great domains for the meaning of the term, that of perception and metalinguistic discourse, as well as the use of different methodological protocols that meet the specificities of each domain. In this sense, it is concluded that more research on the subject should be carried out and disseminated.
