Abstract

This article aims to analyze anti-vaccine and pro-vaccine speeches by former President Bolsonaro and President Lula, respectively, given in statements to the press in 2020 and 2023, while they were heads of states. We seek to investigate how such discourses, present in the two statements published on YouTube, are constructed and what their possible impacts on vaccination adherence are. The analyzes followed the analytical perspective of Patrick Charaudeau's Semiolinguistic Theory, highlighting the established communication contract, the discursive strategies present and the ways of organizing the discourse, emphasizing the argumentative mode. The results of the analyzes showed that the speeches given by Bolsonaro and Lula present arguments in defense of their anti-vaccine and pro-vaccine positions through the use of different argumentative strategies. Among them, the disqualification of the vaccine made by Bolsonaro through controversial arguments stands out, while Lula mobilized arguments based on the idea of the vaccine as a means of preserving life, in a speech based on the appeal.
