Roman literary and writers demarcated Janus as one of the oldest gods in the pantheon. Both the exoticism of his divine image and his ancestry caused the Romans a certain perplexity: republican and Augustan antiquarians tried to unveil the nature of the god more in speculative and philosophical tones than in definitive tones. My objective in this text is to investigate how antiquarians configured and characterized Janus as the god of time based on the main image of the god, his statue in the Aedes Ianus Geminus.
