Ecos da antiga Bizâncio
formação ou fundação de uma pólis no Bósforo?

Antes de se ser remodelada e transformada em Constantinopla, a capital do Império Romano, Bizâncio era uma típica pólis litorânea que, mediante o comércio portuário, tornou-se economicamente próspera. Isso fez dela uma cidade vibrante, independente e multicultural. A localização favorável, os recursos abundantes e a expansão territorial fizeram de Bizâncio o ponto de cruzamento entre continentes, onde ocorriam intensas trocas comerciais, culturais e políticas. É pensando nessa Bizâncio que temos como objetivo, neste artigo, apresentar e discutir questões relativas à criação desta cidade portuária, sobretudo no que concerne à relação entre gregos e trácios na ocupação e desenvolvimento do sítio. Perseguiremos o intrigante questionamento da fundação ou formação de Bizâncio no Bósforo. Com isso, demonstraremos que sua memória se formou como um espaço multicultural e de reconstrução da identidade citadina. Para isso, reunimos diversos relatos de autores antigos, além de vestígios provindos da cultura material. Acreditamos que por sua localização fronteiriça, a imagem de Bizâncio oscilava entre dois polos e para assumir o controle do Bósforo e obter o apoio das demais póleis, os bizantinos precisaram solidificar sua identidade grega e atuar como uma espécie de benfeitora da oikumene. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, também precisaram lidar diplomaticamente com os grupos ditos bárbaros, isto é, os não-gregos.
