Initial learning diagnosis in a junior scientific initiation project on environmental education

Raising awareness about the importance of protecting the environment and the daily health impacts caused by air and water pollution is still necessary. In this study, after theoretical-practical workshops, the learning of 26 students from a 3rd-grade elementary school class was assessed. The air pollution was studied using a lit candle, followed by an examination of the produced soot. For water pollution, murals were used to display images of natural elements, pollutants, and mitigation measures. Subsequently, the students collected and analyzed water samples from their homes, finding that 100% of groundwater samples were contaminated with pathogens. After each workshop, an evaluative activity was conducted, revealing high success rates, with 100% accuracy in exercises related to air pollution and 70% for water pollution. It was concluded that the students assimilated the theoretically discussed and practically applied contents. Despite 30% not identifying all possible health impacts resulting from the presence of pathogens in water, they identified at least one of these impacts, demonstrating a good understanding of the topic and the project's success in achieving its objectives.
