The influence of ethnography in the emergence of Systemic-Functional Linguistics

Abstract

In the reflection proposed by this literature review, we start from de observation that Systemic-Functional Linguistics, represented by Michael Halliday, was influenced by the Ethnography of the anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski. Halliday takes language from a socio-semiotic perspective, which presupposes language as a set of systems and meanings open to social life and intersected by what Malinowski called context of situation and context of culture. Both, context of situation and context of culture, are characterized, in general, by extralinguistics circumstances of enunciation. This influence was significant for the development and maintenance of the functionalist thought of language, a concept that is fundamental, even today, to studies on language as a social phenomenon.
