BEING A GYPSY IN THE 21st CENTURY IN THESES AND VALUES OF THE ELDERS AT RANCHO DO ELÁDIO, IN SOUSA-PB

The article brings an argumentative analysis of the speeches of some members of a gypsy community of the Calon ethnic group, fixed in the municipality of Sousa/PB. It aims to analyze the theses and the values that support these theses about being a gypsy in the 21st Century and to understand how they built identity in the speeches of the “eldest” of one of the three ranches, a term used by them to designate their fixed addresses. The theoretical framework comes from New Rhetoric, developed by Perelman and Olbrech-Tyteca (2005) and adjacent studies. Following the methodological guidelines of Oral History, transcribed according to the methodology of speech shifts, approached by Levinson (1992), the analyzed corpus consists of interviews with the leader and an elderly couple who live in the current Rancho do Eládio, in the city of Sousa-PB. The analyzes point out that the values mobilized at the tops of the hierarchies of the research collaborators, predominantly, were honesty, respect and acceptance, values that are recurrent in the argument due to the stigma that, according to them, historically suffered, with intense presence of prejudice, discrimination and distrust.
