Causes of hospital death of elderly attended by the Unique Health System in Espírito Santo state, Brazil

Introduction:
In recent years it has been possible to observe an accelerated process of population aging. With advancing age there is a higher incidence of diseases, consequently hospitalization and death. Objectives: To describe the main causes of death in the elderly among hospital morbidities of the Unified Health System (SUS) in the health regions of Espírito Santo (ES), Brazil, 2017. Methods: A descriptive study based on the Information System database. Hospital (SIH) available at the SUS Department of Informatics (DATASUS), using as variables the health regions of the ES, gender (female, male), race / color (white, black, brown, yellow, indigenous and ignored). chapters of the Tenth Revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10) and for statistical analysis the absolute frequency, relative frequency, overall mortality coefficient, and lethality rate of the leading causes of deaths of hospitalized elderly in the Regions. Santo, Brazil, in 2017. Results: The morbidities of SUS that most affected the elderly hospitalized in death in the those of the respiratory tract (21.47%), circulatory system (20.16%), infectious and parasitic diseases (16.38%), neoplasms (tumors) (14.69%) and digestive tract diseases (7.07 %). Conclusion: The data presented in this study present relevant information about the morbidities that most affect elderly hospitalized to death, this information can be used for the development of public policies and health actions for prevention, promotion and recovery of the health of the elderly.
