Abstract

 

 Introduction: Ellagic acid (EA) is a natural polyphenol found in many foods such as red fruits, nuts, teas and fermented beverages, presenting a wide variety of beneficial biological effects, highlighting among them the effects on cardiovascular diseases and the great antioxidant potential. Cardiovas­cular diseases are characterized by having a high rate of oxidative stress due to exaggerated accumu­lation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The excess of ROS alters several intracellular signaling and transcription pathways, causing tissue damage and altering normal physiological responses in the cardiovascular system. Objectives: To describe, based on the scientific literature, the main sources of this compound for human consumption, in addition to highlighting its biological effects in diseases of the cardiovascular system. Methods: This is an integrative and selective review of the qualitative and quantitative literature, using publications available in the main scientific databases in the health area. Results: It has been demonstrated that several foods are good sources of AE consumption, such as pomegranate, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry and jaboticaba fruit, as well as walnuts, chestnuts, teas and red wine. In addition, the literature brings a series of beneficial effects that inhibit, atten­uate or cure some cardiovascular dysfunctions in the main diseases that affect this system, such as hypertension, heart attack, stroke, diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Conclusion: It is concluded that AE can be acquired with the consumption of some foods, and it may be useful in combating the harmful effects of cardiovascular diseases.
