Among the known coinage of the Roman Republic, there is a set of coins, produced between 101 and 97 BCE, whose issuance is attributed to the followers of the general and politician Gaius Mario. The pieces have characteristics that are recurrent in coinage of the period, however, at the same time, they display some peculiarities. This article works with the hypothesis that these peculiar elements, that distinguish them from the standard coinages of the time, are not random, but are associated with the project of power and memory of those who produced them. They translate a specific political discourse into visual language and are testimonies that help to reconstruct the trajectory of a group that acted in the public life of the Roman Republic. After brief considerations about context and materiality, the analysis will focus on reading and interpreting the images on the coins.
