'Sisyphus nobis ante oculos' (Lucr. 3. 995): o dissenso entre 'imperium' e 'auctoritas' na Roma de fins da República

Propomos, no artigo que segue, uma nova interpretação acerca da seção do De rerum natura que contém o mito de Sísifo (3, 995-1002). Nossa leitura parte do contexto de crescente desequilíbrio verificado em fins da República, da dinâmica de complementaridade e exclusão recíprocas do binômio propriamente romano de auctoritas e potestas. Lucrécio evoca o personagem mítico como forma de alertar para a necessidade de impedir que o imperium dos altos magistrados lhes seja recusado pelo “não” vindo dos deuses. O autor acusa segmentos da elite comprometidos com a orientação política “dos optimates” de ob-nuntiare, mediante consulta aos auspícios, o trabalho das assembleias eletivas e deliberativas do populus romanus, e, com isso, de frustrar as agendas de líderes alinhados à tradição intelectual dos “popularis”.
