Jean-Baptiste Debret and the representation of black populations

The images produced by the artist Jean-Baptiste Debret are among those that most recognizably represent Imperial Brazil in the construction of the contemporary imaginary regarding the period. This article seeks to problematize the way in which the black population is represented in these works using as a methodology the analysis of three works by the artist, Aplicação do Punigo do Açoite (Application of the Punishment of the Whip), Família Pobre em sua Casa (Poor Family in their House) and Pano de boca (Blow Cloth) made for the extraordinary performance given in the court theater on the occasion of the coronation of Dom Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil, relating them to the historical context, considering the elements that compose these images.
