Abstract

The objective was to study oral health problems in infants and preschoolers treated in a university extension project and relate them to sociodemographic variables and prematurity. Secondary data were collected from dental records of the project "Oral Health Promotion Strategies for Babies" (Pediatric Dentistry discipline - UFES). Tabulation was done using the SPSS program, analysis using descriptive statistics, and comparisons using the chi-square test. A total of 222 medical records were verified, and 22 cases of edentulous infants were excluded, totaling 200. The most frequent oral health problems were malocclusion (35.4%), dental trauma (25.6%), and dental caries (25%), not associated with most sociodemographic variables (p>0.05). Enamel development defects were observed less frequently (11.3%). Of the children with malocclusion, 69.2% used a pacifier (p=0.000). The occurrence of trauma was higher in children who did not attend daycare (55.1%; p=0.023); a lower frequency of caries occurred for mothers with higher education (8%; p=0.048) and in cases of only children (32.7%; p=0.001). The higher frequency of malocclusion (61.5%; p=0.025) and enamel defects (72.2%; p=0.041), as well as the lower frequency of trauma (34%; p=0.022) and caries (28%; p=0.001) were associated with prematurity. It was concluded that the main problems to the oral health of infants and preschool children were malocclusion, trauma and caries.
