From waste to resource: the potential of using cassava wastewater as fertilizer in agriculture

Abstract

Manipueira, the liquid residue from cassava processing, has high potential as a fertilizer due to its composition rich in essential nutrients (N-P-K). Its use in agriculture has been studied as a sustainable alternative to reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers and minimize environmental impacts caused by improper disposal of this waste. In this context, the objective was to analyze the main effects of using manipueira as a fertilizer, as evidenced in the scientific literature, focusing on its influence on soil fertility, plant development, and agricultural productivity. The methodology adopted for this study consisted of an Integrative Literature Review (ILR), conducted through searches in the SciELO and CAPES Periodicals Portal databases, covering publications from the period 2018 to 2024. The results indicate that manipueira can improve soil structure, increase water retention, and supply essential nutrients. However, excessive use may cause salinization in poorly drained soils. Thus, it is concluded that manipueira is a promising alternative for agroecology but requires proper management.

  • Wemerson Leonardo Cruz da Silva, Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Maranhão – IFMA Campus Codó

    Graduated with a degree in Agricultural Sciences Education from the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Maranhão (IFMA/Campus Codó). He is a researcher in the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Education, Health, and Environment (GPIESMA/IFMA), registered with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). He was a scientific initiation scholarship holder (PIBIC/IFMA), participating in the project "Analysis of Strategies and Techniques Used by Farmers in the Practice of Controlled Burning in Two Rural Communities of Codó-MA." He has conducted research on "Characterization of Soil Management Practices and Fertility Performed by Farmers in the Municipality of Timbiras-MA" through PIVIC/IFMA and has collaborated on scientific initiation projects focused on phytopathology and studies on the dropout rates of education degree students. He has experience in extension activities, with a focus on environmental education, notably the implementation of school gardens in municipal institutions in Codó-MA and gardens for growing medicinal and culinary herbs. He was a scholarship holder in the academic monitoring program for the General Zoology course and a volunteer teaching assistant in the Educational Policy and Organization of Basic Education course.

    Graduated with a Full Degree in Agricultural Sciences from the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Maranhão - IFMA Campus Codó (MA), he is a researcher in the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Education, Health, and Environment (GPIESMA), registered with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). He stands out for his active involvement in extension projects focused on environmental education, leading the implementation of school gardens in municipal institutions in Codó and promoting environmental awareness. Additionally, he contributes to an extension project aimed at creating medicinal and culinary herb gardens on the IFMA Codó campus, enriching local agricultural practices. He also participates in an extension project dedicated to training young students from Agricultural Family Schools in Codó-MA. As a researcher in the Institutional Voluntary Scientific Research Program, he investigates soil management practices and soil fertility adopted by farmers in Timbiras-MA.
