THE VARIATION OF THE SUBJECT PRONOUNS NÓS AND A GENTE ON FORTALEZA'S STANDARD SPEECH

This article aims to describe two correlated processes: the alternation of nós and a gente and the 1st person plural subject-verb agreement related to these pronouns functioning as explicit subject, based on the data from the project Porcufort. For this purpose, amongst the groups of linguistic factors, the study of Scherre, Yacovenco and Naro (2018) is replicated, focusing on the influence of the variable tense and type of verbal paradigm in the indicative mood. Moreover, the results of the groups selected by Goldvarb X generic/specific reference of pronouns and age are presented. This study is supported on the theoretical and methodological assumptions proposed by the Variationist Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 2008 [1972]). The results indicate a wide entrance of the form a gente without -mos (60,7%), competing with the pronoun nós with -mos (39,3%). Besides, it can be perceived that the form a gente is preferred in contexts in which the present and the preterit assume the same form (a gente fala ‘we speak’/ nós falamos ‘we speak or we spoke’), avoiding the potential ambiguity between them, tendency attested by the primary research. The form a gente is preferred in generic references by the youngest speakers in the sample.
