Abstract

The Roman banquet (convivium) was an important social practice, which consisted of an occasion of sociability and of closer ties between the participants. We understand this festive moment as a ceremony of prominence, especially in the aristocratic milieus, not being exempt, however, from codes that regulate the rite of this occasion. As we can analyze through the literary work Saturnalia, the author and writer Macrobius narrates a banquet in honor of the Saturn and is concerned with guiding his guests about the existing norms and how they regulate the body of the diner. Thus, we aim at this article to analyze how Macrobius evoked the concept of temperance in order to discipline the body of the guests.
